Kovalam Beach
Kovalam means a grove of coconut trees and truly the coconut trees along the beaches gives it a ravishing look. This internationally renowned beach of Kerala comprises of three adjacent crescent shaped beaches. The palm-fringed bays in secluded coconut groves, promise a relaxed stay. The boundless blue waters of the Arabian Sea and miles of white sands washed away by the surf at the feet of the palms makes
Kovalam a beach paradise. Where when you are tired of aquatics, swimming or sunbathing, you can explore the handicrafts, jewellery and cloth shops spread along the waterfront. Not to speak of the delightful sea-food fare including lobsters available at the beachside restaurants. The crescent-shaped beaches of Kovalam can be divided in three parts. The southern most beach, and the most popular, is the Lighthouse Beach. Further south on the beach one can have a spectacular view of the Vizhinzam mosque. Photography is prohibited here
Cherai Beach
The Cherai Beach is the closest of the beaches to the city of Kochi, if we could safely ignore the Fort Kochi Beach which is more of a sand point than a beach. To get to Cherai, you could go either via Edapally or through Vypin. The latter route is recommended because the roads are much better and the view as you cross three bridges in succession is pleasing to the eye. The cochin skyline as you speed across the bridge and the multitude of fishing boats on either side gives one ample photo opportunities.
The Cherai Beach is around 35 kms from the railway station at Kochi. From the station, you have to reach the marine drive and drive past the Kerala High court. You will reach a T-junction once you cross the three bridges, where you have to turn right to Cherai. The drive is pretty straight from here on. However the point at which you have to turn left to Cherai is a little confusing. We missed the turn and drove straight on, and realized it only after traveling another couple of kilometers, while the last board we saw stated that the beach was just a kilometer ahead.
Alleppey Beach
Alleppey Beach is also known as Alappuzha Beach. Alleppey Beach is one of the most popular beaches of Kerala. One thing that draws people to this beach is the facilities at Vijaya Beach Park. Nearby Alleppey beach there are large network of lakes, lagoons and several freshwater rivers. Alleppey beach is long and has thick palm groves on one end. This is an ideal place to sit and relax.
